Building and Keeping a UX Team

Building and Keeping a UX Team

UX Strategies Summit 2015, San Francisco

A critical part of a successful UX Strategy is how we actually implement what we want to do for our products and services. We’ll look at selling UX as a priority within our organization and then building a team from scratch. We’ll look into how to find good people, and how to help them grow, and how to make a culture that cares about experience and lets us ship great products. John will describe real-world examples from the past ten years of his building, managing, and helping companies develop design and UX teams.

  2. If there are people in your organization who feel they

are not free to suggest ideas, you lose. Do not discount ideas from unexpected sources. Inspiration can, and does, come from anywhere…. It isn’t enough merely to be open to ideas from others. Engaging the collective brainpower of the people you work with is an active, ongoing process. As a manager, you must coax ideas out of your staff and constantly push them to contribute. “

  5. Talented employees need great managers. The talented employee may join

a company because of its charismatic leaders, its generous benefits, and its world-class training programs, but how long that employee stays and how productive he is while he is there is determined by his relationship with his immediate supervisor. “

  10. If there is more truth in hallways than
 in

meetings, you have a problem. “ ” -Ed Catmull, President of Pixar/Disney Animation
  11. It’s not the manager’s job to prevent risks.
 It’s the

manager’s job to MAKE IT SAFE TO TAKE THEM. “ ” -Ed Catmull, President of Pixar/Disney Animation
  12. Our job as managers in creative environments
 is to

protect new ideas from those who don’t understand
that in order for greatness to emerge, there must be
phases of not-so-greatness. Protect the future, not the past. “ ” -Ed Catmull, President of Pixar/Disney Animation
  13. “Yes, it’s true that a team at Google couldn’t decide

between two blues, so they’re testing 41 shades between each blue to see which one performs better. I had a recent debate over whether a border should be 3, 4 or 5 pixels wide, and was asked to prove my case. I can’t operate in an environment like that. I’ve grown tired of debating such minuscule design decisions. There are more exciting design problems in this world to tackle.” “
