prepared by Kat Cazanis (Nitty Gritty Digital) www.nittygrittydigital.com.au
  2. Social Networks Top 3 networks people use to discover new

music: Social Networks vs Australian users •  Facebook : 10,889,960 •  You Tube : 10,000,000 •  Myspace : 470,000 Statistics via www.socialmedianews.com.au Notable mentions: Soundcloud and Bandcamp are music specific social networking sites that have large worldwide audiences. While they do not have the buy-in of the above three sites, they offer impressive tools and features for musicians.
  3. Your band as a brand Consider your target audience -

who are they, where do they live online and how can you best get their attention? Consideration of your audience can help you with creating content and encouraging dialogue. Remember, that everything you write, including on your personal networks can be accessed by anyone. The below Twitter conversation caught the attention of US customs, and Leigh and his friend were banned from the US. A pretty extreme case, but nonetheless an example of how messages can be interpreted differently!
  4. Your band as a brand Timeliness - if you don’t

have time, don’t do it! If it takes you more than an day to answer questions, reassess whether you need to be on that network, and if you do prioritise and spend time on it. Sydney based solo artist, Sam Buckingham, used Pozile, a crowdfunding social network, and raised money to make her own EP. The sharing capabilities in this network allow people who made donations toTweet or Facebook their activity therefore spreading the news about Sam’s project. Via, Pozible. Don’t forget, you qualify for a Pozible discount with a Music Victoria membership.
  5. Your band as a brand Leverage - see your social

media presence as another avenue for PR – tag other brands that your have relationships with in your updates on Facebook or Twitter, the more eyes that see you brand, the more fans you can potentially gain. Take Mikelangelo and St Clare, up to 19,000+ likes, when they only began their Facebook page in 2010!
  6. Doing it for yourself Cutting out the middle man; as

this Sufjan Stevens’ case study shows, there’s a lot that we can do ourselves to promote our music.
