  4. THINK ABOUT IT… How do you think your research as

    a graduate student will be different than your research as an undergraduate student? How might it be similar? 3
  5. SEARCHING DATABASES: A REVIEW 1. Find a list of databases

    on the “Course” or “Subject” gateway 2. Choose one database to start, but don’t stop there! 3. Keywords – think like a computer 4. Try different combinations in multiple searches 5. Use the feature and specialties of the database to save time and help you out
  6. EXAMPLE How does sleep deprivation affect health? Are you interested

    in a specific population? • Students? • Children? • Male vs female? • Non-human? Which aspect of “health?” • Physical health • Mental health • Etc… * / AND / OR / NOT “sleep deprivation” AND (depression OR anxiety)
  7. LET’S TRY IT…. • Cook OneSearch • Search more* of

    the Library's collections at once. • Find books, articles, media, government information, and other library resources all in one place. • Search what Towson owns as well as resources at other USMAI Libraries. *but not ALL!!
  8. GROUPS OF 2 OR 3 Each group choose a different

    database to analyze… •PsycINFO •Scopus •Google Scholar •PubMed
  9. ANALYZE YOUR DATABASE – 10-15 MIN. (?) Topic: Gender differences

    in social and emotional development Which words (or combinations of words) find the best results for the topic? Synonyms? Is there an advanced search? Which do you prefer: advanced or basic search? Why? Which features of the database were most useful? How do you save or export your results? Will it generate citations? Problems or questions? Be prepared to demonstrate your search!
  10. PSYCINFO: TOP 5 FEATURES • Thesaurus – quickly narrow your

    search to a specific, defined subject (applied with a human brain). Find related terms. • Fields – allow for more sophisticated searching. Fields of note: • Grant Sponsorship • Methodology • Population & Age group • Tests & Measures • Saving results • Browsing indices • Search alerts/RSS feeds
  11. SCOPUS: TOP 5 FEATURES • Citation chaining • Author and

    Affiliation searches • Search alerts/RSS feeds • Citation alerts – author and document • Impact factors – can be controversial, but interesting to look at
  12. GOOGLE SCHOLAR: TOP 5 FEATURES • Setting preferences – including

    “Library links” • Set up scholar profile – “My citations” • Creating search alerts • Good for finding “grey” literature and information in Institutional Repositories • Use the advanced search
  13. PUBMED : TOP 5 FEATURES • Default sort: “Recently Added”

    • Review articles are well-marked • “Review” [Article Type] • Subject – “Systematic Review” • RSS and save search • Search history in advanced search • MESH terms (in a citation)
  14. GENERAL THINGS TO REMEMBER • Use the database and citations

    to generate synonyms/search terms • Abstract • Subject terms • Cited references • Use limiters… carefully • Multiple searches in multiple databases • Use advanced database features to your advantage • Interlibrary loan • Bonus! Citation Management • Refwords • Zotero
