  1. Reported speech • Sometimes we want to tell somebody what

another person said. We call this reported speech. • We can report another person’s word or our own words. 2
  2. Example Direct speech: Reported speech: It is broken. The doctor

said it was broken. I am looking for my keys. She said she was looking for her keys 5
  3. Said and Told • We can use both Said and

Told in reported speech. We use (said) if we do not say who the person was talking to. • E.g. Fionna said she was resting in hospital. 6
  4. Said and Told • We use (told) when we mention

who the person was talking to. We usually put a name or object pronoun after (told). • E.g. Fionna told me she was resting in hospital • My teacher told Sam he needed to study for the exam. • Object pronouns: me, him, you, her, it, us, them, you. 7
  5. Time expression in reported speech. • When we use reported

speech, time words also change. • E.g. I am busy today. Changes to She said she was busy that day. 8
