Dronebirds are Go! : How Drones and Aerial Imagery are Building Disaster Resilience in Japan

Webinar Title: "Dronebirds are Go!": How Drones and Aerial Imagery are Building Disaster Resilience in Japan

Speaker: Taichi Furuhashi, Professor at Aoyama Gakuin University and President of CrisisMappers Japan
In the aftermath of the disastrous earthquake and tsunami that hit East Japan in 2011, local communities are now relying on new technologies such as mapping, VR and drones. An Aoyamagakuin University's Professor and President of Crisis Mappers Japan with a strong passion for connecting and empowering people through shared knowledge, Dr. Furuhashi launched Dronebird in 2015, a specific drone-based project for crisis management and disaster response.

Description:
With fierce typhoons, floods, landslides, volcanoes' eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis striking Japan every year, the country has learnt to become one of the most resilient in the world. Aerial mapping and satellite imaging have proven to be of uttermost importance after a disaster but they also showed some limitations when it comes to unpredictable weather conditions and smooth data feed for quick decision-making. As drone technology is on the rise, high-resolution imaging becomes more accessible and easy to use for everyone. The Dronebird's team will share the current state of the map and how multirotors are concretely benefitting local communities in their resilience journey.
