Observation & Evaluation Deciding the next step
What is observation & evaluation? • Part of the planning
process • Observation is the process of writing down what the archer's technique is • Evaluation is the process of working out what to do about it
What to look for? • Everything! • Level of detail
depends on your technical understanding
What to look for? • AGB standardised technical assessment •
Static • Motion • Execution
Static • Stance • Posture • Body & head position
• Alignment • String fingers • Bow hand • Anchor • Bow arm/shoulder • String arm/shoulder • Clearance
Motion • Set -> Set-up • Rotation to alignment •
Drawing • Expansion • Stability
Execution • Draw arm/elbow • Release fingers • Bow arm
• Bow hand • Overall movement of face/body/head
How to look? • 4 main angles • 3 o'clock
• 6 o'clock • 7 o'clock (5 for a left handed archer) • 9 o'clock • Use photos & video • Don't stand too close all the time!
3 o'clock - statics • Stance • Posture • Body
& head position • Alignment • String fingers • Bow hand • Anchor • Bow arm/shoulder • String arm/shoulder • Clearance

Evaluation • … Now what?
Evaluation • Good list of technique that the archer has
• Work out what's good, what's not so bad, what's bad • Prioritise
DO ONE THING ok, sometimes two
A few golden rules
Look first Coach later
Look for the underlying cause
Start from the foundations
Stability before movement
Golden rules • Look first, coach later • Look for
the underlying cause • Start from the foundations • Stability before movement
