I gave this presentation to a group of high school students. We discussed how choices made on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat today do contribute to the image you create of yourself; you're creating and managing your own reputation with each post you make. How reputation impacts "real life" after high school.

    networking ! Getting/keeping a job! Bad news spreads faster, farther than good news.! Personal branding: You’re online; you don't have a choice. Managing your image is your job.

    or positioning themselves and their careers.! You don't realize you're branding yourself, but you are! The image you put out there is how people think of you.! New level of imperative due to rise of social media.! Social media has the ability to affect the real world.

    71% use Facebook, 22% LinkedIn, 21% Pinterest, 18% Twitter, 17% Instagram! Teens: 87% text daily, 61% use FB, 51% Instagram, 46% Snapchat! Teens on FB declined -25% over past 3 years*! According to Pew Research Center; * iStrategy Labs research study

  6. What not to do: FB case study A woman called

    in sick to work at National Suisse in Switzerland complaining of migraines and saying she needed to work in a darkened room at home.! She stayed home, and when her Facebook activity started showing up, she was promptly fired.

    Billion+ total users (44% never sent a tweet, considered inactive. Seriously?!)! 500 Million tweets/day! 78% of tweeters mobile! 46% of Twitter users tweet once/day! You can either have a public or private account! Digital Insights

    Rose who worked for Special Olympics Arizona (SOA), wrote a Twitter post in which he used "special ed" to describe people sitting near him at a sports game. ! Rose later apologized, but leaders at SOA fired him.
  9. Teen’s #MansionParty Ain't no party like a Brampton, Ontario, #MansionParty!!

    Party was planned on Facebook, but when a Twitter photo went viral, 2,000+ teens arrived.! Used hashtag #MansionParty! Neighbor called 911, 60 police units, SWAT officers, K-9 units arrived.! $70K worth of damage caused! Mom, ”I told my son he could have some friends over."

    his girlfriend on Instagram! He damaged his own reputation, affecting relationships & gaining unwanted notoriety! Better options:! 1. Face-to-face! 2. Over the phone! 3. A heartfelt letter! We are all real people who have real feelings!

    intimacy.! Young people feel socially supported by having large networks of online friends they may never see. ! Intimate friendships of teens are declining due to social media platforms. ! Teens are preferring digital communication over face-to-face conversations.     Specialist: “E-mail addresses are FREE and appropriate e-mail addresses are a MUST.” ! Manager of State Department: “Don’t write e-mails or professional letters in social speak!”! HR Manager at a private company: “Just finished a search for a new employee. Came down to 2 options. One Facebook profile had too many selfies; this made them look silly. We didn’t choose that person!”! Pizza chain owner: “Found out an employee was going to quit because they were talking about it on Facebook. We started giving them fewer hours.”
  16. 5 Tips to Manage Your Rep: Think before you post:

    Listen to your inner voice! Use common sense: Would you share it with Grandma? ! Take charge: It’s your reputation at stake. It’s OK to untag or request people take a picture down. ! Act quickly: If negative or inappropriate dialogue begins on your profile, stop it or delete it. ! Spread the good word: Share your successes, keep the “TMI” stuff to yourself. Lift others up & they will lift you up, as well. ! Think of not only today, but tomorrow.
