  4.   ARTS&SCIENCE       CONCEPT  BRIEF  -‐  Notes

2.02.15       1.    The  abached  document  represents  the  briefest  summary  possible  of  the  essenBal  characterisBcs  of  Arts&Science.  (A  lengthier  document  is  available,  for  the   insomniac  within  you.)    Pay  close  abenBon  to  the  abached  proposed  schedule.  (NOTE  1)       2.    The  concept  calls  for  an  ar2s2c  quartet.    In  addiBon  to  Daniel  (hbp://www.danieldavidmoses.com)      and  myself  (hbp://www.taylortheatre.com),  the  other  two   under  consideraBon  are  my  nephew,  an  internaBonally  renowned  spoken  word  arBst      (hbp://dwaynemorgan.ca/          and  this  bold  and  exciBng  young  composer       hbp://www.alicepingyeeho.com/  ;    To  be  confirmed  by  mid-‐February.        The  idea  is  to  weave  a  compelling  new  arBsBc  insBtuBon  (and  audiences)  from  these   dazzlingly  diverse  components;       3.    A  primary  principle:    while  A&S  will  be  fundamentally  commibed  to  partnerships  both  naBonal  and  internaBonal,  A&S  either  originates,  or  does  not  parBcipate,  in   every  creaBve  undertaking.    For  discussion.       4.    The  niche  being  addressed  is  obvious,  so  I  won't  bore  you  with  the  details.    For  discussion.       5.    A  primary  principle:    we  either  soar  on  individual,  foundaBonal  and  corporate  partnerships,  or  we  sink  without  it.    Government  funding  should  be  the  least  of  our   concerns  (it  takes  care  of  itself,  and  it  is  limited).    And  we  do  this  without  being  boring  and  arBsBcally/philosophically  compromised.    For  discussion.       6.    While  the  parBculars  might  change,  we'd  like  to  sBck  to  the  schedule.       7.    A  primary  principle:    the  rapid  launch  to  stability  necessary  depends  on  many  factors,  but  principally  the  following  four:              a)  an  internaBonal  co-‐producBon  of  Daniel  David  Moses'  20-‐actor  masterpiece,  Brebeuf's  Ghost     (hbp://www.canadianshakespeares.ca/anthology/DanielDavidMoses.pdf    (available  for  reading)  that  simultaneously  -‐  and  from  a  different  and  necessary   perspecBve  -‐  celebrates  our  150  birthday  (2017)  and  introduces  onto  the  world-‐  wide  stage  the  best  kept  secret  in  English  language  drama  (DDM);       b)  a  quasi-‐commercial  (preferably  with  the  Mirvishes)  naBonal  touring  Canadian  producBon  of  Suzan-‐Lori  Parks'  magesBc  new  Father  Comes  Home  from  the  Wars         (hbp://www.nyBmes.com/2014/10/29/theater/father-‐comes-‐home-‐from-‐the-‐wars-‐by-‐suzan-‐lori-‐parks-‐at-‐the-‐public-‐theater.html?_r=0);  We  have  a  long  and  fruilul   associaBon  with  the  work  of  America's  greatest  current  playwright,  having  premiered  her  works  to  great  success  in  Canada.       NOTE  1:    all  parEculariEes  are  subject  to  change  at  this  point,  but  it  gives  you  a  sense  of  the  rhythm,  scale  and  ambiEon  of  the  undertaking,  and  the  sparseness  of  your   official  commitment  (one  board  meeEng  every  four  months...!   6
  5.          c)  a  stylisBcally  bold,  musically  innovaBve

and  emoBonally  riveBng  collecBve  creaBon  (à  la    hbp://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/02/09/hamiltons)  about,  broadly,   life  in  our  complex  city.    These,  along  with  an  irresistable  iniBal  series  of  public  talks,  and  commitment  to  arBsBc  and  entrepreneurial  training  and  development,  should  pull   us  rapidly  forward.      (NOTE  2)       d)    an  arBsBc  and  entrepreneurial  training  iniBaBve  centred  in  the  JuncBon/Mount  Dennis  neighborhood  and  focused  on  a  triple-‐threat  youth  collecBve;       8.    And  so  on..we're  hoping  for  an  iniBal  board  meeBng  in  mid/late  February,  so  we  can  discuss.       9.    It's  ambiBous.    But  ambiBon  does  not  necessarily  mean  (boring)  labor.    It  means  boldness,  imaginaBon,  and  relevance..       10.    Thank  you  for  coming  along...       cT     NOTE  2:    Other  possible  projects  in  the  developmental  pipeline  includes  an  operaEc  adaptaEon  of  AusEn  Clarke's  The  Polished  Hoe;  an  original  new  opera  about  the  ravaging   of  Nanjing  by  Diana  Tso  and  Alice  Ho  (see  above),;  Crazy  Dave,  adapted  by  Daniel  David  Moses  from  the  classic  aboriginal  book  by  Basil  Johnston;  Cafe  Cantanta,  about  the   great  Lhasa  de  Sala  (hXp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lhasa_de_Sela)  by  Dominique  Gauthier  and  Colin  Taylor;  Biyi  Bandele  (hXp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biyi_Bandele)'s   adaptaEon  of  Chinua  Achebe's  Things  Fall  Apart,  (hXp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Things_Fall_Apart  ),  with  either  hXp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Oyelowo    or   hXp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiwetel_Ejiofor  in  the  lead  role;  Anne  Carson  (hXp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Carson)'s  adaptaEon  of  _Aeschylus's    Agammemnon  ( hXp://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4770925-‐an-‐oresteia),  an  epic  in  the  park;,  and  so  on...the  world  (just  not  Toronto  theatre)  is  full  of  great  stories  and  possibiliEes...       7
