    referring to the width of an uppercase M, an em is now the distance equal to the size of the typeface. (an em is 48 pts in a 48-point typeface). An en is half the size of an em. Mostly used to define spaces or dashes.

    LIGATURE The character formed by combining two or more letterforms.

    The curved or diagonal stroke at the finish of certain letterforms.

    The self-contained finish of a stroke without a serif. This is something of catch-all verb. They can have many shapes, included rounded (like a finial).
