‘Your Role’: as a voice for the disabled in Nigeria - #tNAP

‘Your Role’: as a voice for the disabled in Nigeria - #tNAP

The Nigeria Ability Project (#tNAP) :
Is an exciting new initiative designed to bring disability to the national and social agenda in Nigeria, which was inspired in 2009 but brought to reality in 2013.

The plan is to focus the minds of everyone on this hitherto ignored group which constitutes about 10-15% of the population in most countries of the world, with this number reflected in Nigeria as being about 20 million persons.

what  immediately   plays  in  your  mind?
  3. IntroducBon   The  Nigeria  Ability  Project    (#tNAP)

Is  an  exciBng  new  iniBaBve  designed  to  bring  disability   to  the  naBonal  and  social  agenda  in  Nigeria,  which  was   inspired  in  2009  but  brought  to  reality  in  2013.       It  is  a  charity  registered  in  the  United  Kingdom  as  a   company  limited  by  guarantee,  with  the  registraBon   number  8858351.       The  plan  is  to  focus  the  minds  of  everyone  on  this   hitherto  ignored  group  which  consBtutes  about  10-‐15%   of  the  populaBon  in  most  countries  of  the  world,  with   this  number  reflected  in  Nigeria  as  being  about  20   million  persons.
  4. IntroducBon   As  we  discuss  here,  several  persons  are  unaware

of  the   true  nature  of  disability  because  it  is  largely  believed  to   affect  the  other  person.  In  pracBce,  what  this  means  is   that  no  one  bothers  to  create  opportuniBes  for  their   employment,  access  to  ameniBes,  etc.       However,  it  is  important  to  note  that  one  incident  or   event  can  make  an  able  bodied  person  become  disabled   in  an  instant  which  means  it  is  an  issue  that  we  should   all  take  very  serious.       This  project  aims  to  address  these  and  other  maZers  by   increasing  the  awareness  of  the  Nigerian  public  and   iniBaBng  projects  which  highlight  issues  around   disability,  while  working  to  improve  opportuniBes  and   access  for  disabled  people.
  5. IntroducBon   tNAP’s  Aims     The  aims  of  the

project  are:     •  To  moBvate  and  challenge  disabled  persons  to   aZain  their  full  potenBals,  while  encouraging  their   friends  and  family  to  support  them  in  achieving  such.     •  To  increase  awareness  of  the  abiliBes  that   disabled  people  have,  as  well  as  their  rights  to  equality   of  access  to  all  aspects  of  society.     •  To  work  with  individuals  and  organisaBons  to   create  enabling  environments  for  the  inclusion  of   disabled  people  in  all  aspects  of  naBonal  life  in  Nigeria.
