  1. INTRODUCTION It is a type of research in which researchers

observe and repeatedly examine the same individuals to detect any changes that might occur over a period of time A researcher wishes to look at the changes in cholesterol level in women above the age of 30 but below 40 years who have jogged regularly over the last 10 years.
  2. DEFINITION Longitudinal research is an observational study design that tracks

the same subjects repeatedly over an extended period to observe long term changes , trends or developments.
  3. TREND STUDIES • Trend studies are longitudinal survey designs that

involve identifying a population and examining changes within that population over time. • Trend study samples different groups of people at different times from same population. • Trend studies are common around presidential election time .
  4. In 2003 ,1000 people are asked for their support of

same sex marriage In 2013, a different set of 1000 people are asked for their support of same sex marriage. The difference in opinions is the trend in support for same sex marriage.
  5. COHORT ANALYSIS • Rather than studying trends in a population,

researchers may be interested in identifying a sub group in the population ,called a cohort, that possess a common defining characteristic. • A cohort is any group of individuals who are linked in some way or who have experienced the same significant life event within a given period • A cohort study is a longitudinal survey design in which a researcher identifies a sub population based on some specific characteristics and then studies that sub population over time.
  6. PANEL STUDIES • Panel study is a longitudinal survey design

in which the researcher examines the same people over time. • A panel study involves a sample of people from a bigger population and is conducted at specified intervals of longer period. • One of the most important features of the panel study is that data is repeatedly collected from the sample at different points in time.
  7. The high school seniors studied in 1998 will be the

same people studied in 2000, 1 year after graduation , and again in 2002 , 2 years after graduation.
  8. CONCLUSION • Longitudinal research provides powerful insights into how and

why variables change over time. • Despite challenges such as cost and attrition, it remains essential for advancing knowledge in psychology, medicine, sociology, and education. • Effective implementation requires careful planning, consistent methodology, and long-term resource commitment.
