  1. The Year of Instagram We’ve long had a small presence

on Instagram, but 2013 was the year things really kicked off. A huge Open Day campaign was followed up by fabulous shots year-round from @unimelb, @unilibrary, @mdhs_sc, @umsuunimelb, @unimelbadventures, @carte_crepes, @kwongleedow, @msei_unimelb and more. Thursday, 19 December 13
  2. Reddit: First Steps Dr. Ken Winkel was our first victim

    - um, volunteer - in a quest to introduce our researchers to the ‘front page of the internet’. Ken’s AMA (Ask Me Anything) left Redditors worldwide knowing more about Australia’s dangerous fauna, and venom research. Thursday, 19 December 13
  3. Styles Saves the Day What to do when a hashtag

goes haywire? 13MELB staff came up trumps with a great save that our students loved. Thursday, 19 December 13
  4. @GlynDavisVC Joins Twitter In 2013 we welcomed our fearless leader

to the strange and wonderful world of Twitter. Now @GlynDavisVC supports our academic and student community online, as well as in the boardroom. Thursday, 19 December 13
  5. Live Chat Our collaborative series of live chat events -

where staff and current students from around the University answered high school students’ questions - was very popular. Students loved being able to get honest answers from real Uni students, and we complied - even when the questions were about touching dead bodies! (Ew.) Thursday, 19 December 13
  6. Hour with the Expert After their successful Live Chat, the

MDHS Student Centre created a regular chat series now known as ‘Hour With the Expert’. The events break down barriers between students and academics: they’re a lot less intimidating, and a lot easier to get to, than an office hour. Thursday, 19 December 13
  7. Science Panda Science had an unexpected winner on their hands

this year. ‘Science Panda’ was cast for a cameo, but his moves were irresistible and he stole the show! Thursday, 19 December 13
  8. #UOMFOI at Uni or from home This year’s Festival of

Ideas was a social event! 2330 viewers from 30 countries tuned in to watch Festival panels, and chat with panelists and fellow attendees over Twitter. We think it’s a fabulous example of what can go right in social, when all of us use our accounts to collaborate on something great. Thursday, 19 December 13
  9. Far from useless... When you can’t beat them, join them!

The @unilibrary account is one of the most popular on campus, and it stays that way because they’re not afraid to chat with students and let their hair down from time to time. This tweet was retweeted many times... and even translated into French! Thursday, 19 December 13
  10. Wind it Up Union House Theatre struck gold with this

year’s end infographic showing numbers of performances, injuries (none - well done crew!), and even romantic liaisons. We agree that 258 student theatre hook-ups probably is a conservative estimate, and probably don’t need to know the details. Thursday, 19 December 13
  11. Harlem Shake Blink and you’ll miss it, social trends can

be hot, then not, within days. Kudos to the Union team who organised a Harlem Shake in O-Week - and managed to pull it off in the right timeframe! Great start to the year guys. Thursday, 19 December 13
  12. Five! In the same ‘be prepared’ vein... how did the

Law School get this announcement of their top-five ranking out so fast? They made several versions of the image, so they were all ready to go when results came out. Students and alumni alike loved the image. Thursday, 19 December 13
  13. Student Internships Many of us welcomed social media interns into

our offices for the first time this year. They’ve brought valuable insight to our social endeavours and helped us with major campaigns. Most importantly, other students have really appreciated the peer to peer assistance. We’re proud of our interns and look forward to seeing what they get up to next year. Thursday, 19 December 13
  14. #Asiaed2013 The Asia Education Foundation worked their conference hashtag so

well, it trended on Twitter despite competition from election debates and the globally infamous #suppository hashtag. Thursday, 19 December 13
  15. Twitpitch Our @uommedia Tweeters Ryan Sheales and David Scott wowed

conference goers with ‘Twitpitch’, the story of how they use Twitter to connect our researchers with journalists - and then audiences. Thursday, 19 December 13
  16. Print a Printer! Twitter has been buzzing all year with

news of our 3D printing, including printing from scans. We loved sharing the story of a printing party - ‘printing printers’ for disadvantaged schools. Congratulations @MelbITSResearch! Thursday, 19 December 13
  17. Takeovers The @unimelb Instagram account is at its best when

students run the show. This year, students from several faculties ran Instagram for a day - current students and teens loved seeing the campus from a ‘real’ point of view. It was a great reminder to us that good marketing is often just a matter of getting out of the way. Thursday, 19 December 13
  18. Melbourne BITE This new Engineering and IT blog is run

by students, for students. Revlon polish has so many uses - you really do learn something new every day at UoM. Thursday, 19 December 13
  19. Unimelb Adventures Our favourite collaboration award this year has to

go to Science student Daphane Ng. Her proudly independent blog tells the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about Uni - a great service to other students. Daph’s friendly face is well known to almost every student services staff member, as she’s always chasing answers to share. Thursday, 19 December 13
  20. Class photos An oldie but a goodie, nothing beats a

class photo for good memories and the chance to tag friends. Nice initiative from the Law team. Thursday, 19 December 13
  21. Goodbye and Good Luck @uomalumni ‘s current graduation campaign asks

graduands to share their moment via Instagram or Twitter. The ‘congratulations’ page is buzzing! Thursday, 19 December 13
  22. MSEI’s New Stapler We all cheered with the Melbourne Social

Equity Institute when they acquired their very own long arm stapler (and celebrated on Instagram!) Congratulations MSEI and everyone in the social team at Melbourne,on a great year. You’re amazing and we wish we could have featured more of your many achievements. We can’t wait to see what 2014 brings. Thursday, 19 December 13
