Hire a consultant to help you do the hiring process well, if you can. Talk with your colleagues about this issue. Read up on it. Talk some more. Try to bias yourselves positively toward people who are different than you.

    E N O T H I N G E L S E F R O M T H I S S T O R Y : PLEASE, plan your hiring process explicitly before you’re in the middle of it. Think about what questions you want to ask candidates. Spend time with candidates. Get past initial impressions and into a real conversation with them. Don’t ask anyone if they’ll eat a kitten.
