Tech Hiring: F-

From the outrageous to the sad, hiring experiences in tech can be really ... bad! For the hiree and the hirer! From both sides of the table, Crystal has seen illegal and immoral behaviour -- choices that damage companies as much as they damage individuals. Let's do better. Please. We can improve this.

    more angry and

PLEASE, think about what it will be like to
hire the first person into your company
who is very different from you. Hire a
consultant to help you do the hiring
    process well, if you can.
Talk with your colleagues about this
issue. Read up on it. Talk some more. Try
    to bias yourselves positively toward
people who are different than you.

If we proactively work on our
    thoughts and actions, we
    can get better at combatting
    the inherent problems in our
    cultural background.

    PLEASE, plan your hiring process
explicitly before you’re in the middle of it.
Think about what questions you want to
    ask candidates.
Spend time with candidates. Get past
initial impressions and into a real
    conversation with them.
Don’t ask anyone if they’ll eat a kitten.
