Transcript

  1. 5 short films showing how climate change might affect Scotland's

forests & how we can increase resilience to climate threats www.forestry.gov.uk/fr/AdaptationVideos
  2. The aims of these trials are: • To maximise the

yield of information on SRC and SRF through an embedded programme of targeted research, development and monitoring. • To be an educational resource by demonstrating best practice on an operational scale under realistic conditions. It is considered essential to engage with all potential stakeholders in energy forestry to ensure that the information gained and demonstrated meets the need. Other FCS demonstration facilities
  3. Demonstrating adaptation – possible next steps (2013/14) • Understanding constraints

to uptake of best adaptation practice guidance • Testing the application of research guidance and decision support tools in a working forest environment (e.g. with a focus on species diversity) • Testing the use of ‘adaptation indicators’ – how to record adaptation action (process indicators), and the effect of action (outcome indicators) • Exploring how to embed ‘adaptive forest management’ in a working forest, for example through amendment to short and long term planning cycles • Setting up specific studies to fill important knowledge gaps, e.g. flood management in a changing climate • Using an ‘ecosystems’ approach to understand the impact of adaptation scenarios • Putting financial information to adaptation options Transparent and open about process, success and failure through effective engagement and communication
  4. Demonstrating adaptation – possible next steps (2013/14) • Well documented

adaptation case studies • Near real-time reporting on adaptation experience • Adaptation discussion forum for Scotland – real Knowledge Exchange • Continued (and intensified?) campaign of multimedia communication • Closer working with ICF, Confor etc to provide joined-up messages • Widening the Climate Ready Network with examples in the private/urban forestry sector(s) • Using follow-up events (e.g. Climate Week 2014) to promote demonstration and adaptive forest management Transparent and open about process, success and failure through effective engagement and communication
  5. Building forest resilience – how best to spread the word?

Relevant messages? • The status quo is not an option – and there’s no time to wait for cast-iron research • Change can capture opportunity as well as reduce vulnerability • Modelled outcomes play a part in evidence for adaptation but… • ‘Real life’ evidence and experience is valuable too • ‘Learning by doing’ – provided the experience is shared • Making full use of digital technologies
