of personalised learning MYTHS OF TIME •  Half our life is spent trying to find something to do with the time we have rushed through life trying to save Wil Rogers
  2. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning MYTHS OF TIME •  This presentation and discussion will look at the issue of time, and that the main issue with delivering personalised learning is not the llackz of time, but the issue of prioritising and managing time •  Technology and learning technologies which can not only enhance the learning experience can also save time •  There are other methods that can save time, such as collaboration, sharing and re-using, again technology can makes these methods easier and faster
  3. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning TIME FLIES LIKE AN ARROW. FRUIT FLIES LIKE A BANANA. •  It will focus on the nature of managing a shared VLE/MLE and providing a centralised support function within the context of whole college implementation and embedding of e-learning. We will show how the Western Colleges Consortium (WCC) has approached the issue and developed strategies in utilising a VLE across the curriculum spectrum within a college. •  These strategies are based on a whole college approach, in other words, trying to ensure that e-learning is embedded across the whole curriculum and not just on the fringe. Lisa Grossman

of personalised learning WESTERN COLLEGES CONSORTIUM •  The aim of the WCC is to support the partner colleges in increasing retention, achievement and success •  Formed in 1997 the Western Colleges Consortium (WCC) for Online Learning supports the development and embedding of e-learning and the use of a shared Virtual Learning Environment •  The four partner colleges are: Norton Radstock (lead institution), City of Bath, Filton and Weston

of personalised learning WHAT DO WE MEAN BY TIME? •  There is never enough time •  We need to give people time •  If we had more time we could do a lot more •  I need time •  Time is money
  6. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning TIME IS PRECIOUS •  There are only so many hours in a day •  There are huge pressures on our time •  We often need to decide on how best to use our time, what and how to prioritise that time
  7. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning WHAT IS THE JOB? •  For every person who wants to teach there are approximately thirty people who don't want to learn--much. •  W. C. Sellar and R. J. Yeatman •  Teachers open the door. You enter by yourself. •  Chinese Proverb •  Good teaching is one-fourth preparation and three-fourths theatre. •  Gail Godwin •  He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches. •  George Bernard Shaw
  8. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning WHAT DO TUTORS ACTUALLY DO? •  Teach •  Facilitate •  Support •  Find •  Create •  Invent •  Structure •  Photocopy •  Web Design
  9. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning WHO DECIDES WHAT TUTORS DO? •  Tutor? •  Learners? •  Managers? •  SMT? •  Who managed the tutor? •  Who manages the time?
  10. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning LEARNERS AND TIME •  Learners are individuals •  Learners need individualised learning •  If tutors had the time they could provide a personalised learning experience to the learners – and this is regardless of whether they use ILT or not •  Learners do not have all the time in the world… –  Dependents –  Travel –  Access
  11. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning AN PERSONALISED EXPERIENCE •  Every learner is different, the use of a range of ready made resources and websites on the VLE, allows both extension activities for gifted learners and a choice of activities for less able learners, without a large investment in time by the tutor •  The use of the VLE can allow a differentiated mode of attendance for learners allowing those learners having attendance difficulties (whether this be job, money, dependents, disability) to continue on the programme
  12. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning PRIORITISING •  Everyone can do with more time… •  We have unlimited wants and limited resources •  It is not about giving more time, it is more about using the time you have and using it more effectively •  Using tools and technology can save time, to provide you with the time you need to support learners •  It is about managing tutors, their jobs and their time •  If you leave it to the tutors, will it happen?
  13. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning E-LEARNING SUPPORT FOR STAFF •  Make things really simple for staff •  Keep tools simple and easy to use •  Try not to overload staff with too much to know, too much training, too many tools, too much to do… •  Barriers –  Access to resources –  Access to training –  Time management •  You can not expect staff to have a range and wealth of IT and ILT skills immediately
  14. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning EMBED ILT WITHOUT TUTORS •  Colleges already embed ltraditionalz resources into colleges without tutors, it`s called the Learning Resources Centre •  Have courses/packages on your VLE with NLN and Ferl materials already loaded, add a peer discussion group, useful web links (such as the VTS and the RDN) and don`t forget an e-mail link to their tutor
  15. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning SHARING AND COLLABORATION •  From a tutor's perspective, working together, both internally and externally, can have significant impact on the speed and quality of development •  The ability to bring high quality expertise from different disciplines to share good practice, develop ideas and address staff training and implementation strategies can be highly effective •  Sharing effective practice and resources can save time and enhance the learning experience
  16. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning PROCESS VERSUS LEARNING •  The key is to remember that the technology is unimportant whereas the process of learning is •  In a "traditional" learning environment, we do not concern ourselves with the construction and maintenance of desks, chairs, the whiteboard or even overhead projectors, and it is the same in a virtual learning environment. The technology facilitates learning and support and should be used in conjunction rather than in isolation
  17. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning SHARING GOOD AND EFFECTIVE PRACTICE AMONGST STAFF •  More people to draw from for good and effective practice models •  Avoids duplication of effort •  Use of best practice supports end learners •  Specialisation possible
  18. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning SHARING COSTS •  Sharing the costs of technological development and tools •  ILT developments can cost a lot of money •  Total costs generally exceed the original cost by a factor of five or ten •  Costs of development can be split between four colleges •  Collaboration avoids duplication of costs
  19. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning SHARING OF RESOURCES, SYSTEMS AND PROCEDURES •  Why should each college reinvent the wheel? •  Sharing of curriculum resources, both purchased, college and in-house •  Collaborative approach to the writing, design and implementation of e-resources •  Centralised and collaborative approach to systems, protocols and procedures •  Ability for centralised skilled team to provide support to tutors
  20. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning METHODS TO SAVE TIME •  Provide support at a time and place to suit the need for both tutors and learners –  online support for example, instant messaging, •  Keep training, little and often –  small bite sized chunks done monthly (or weekly) •  Give access to relevant NLN, Ferl (and other materials) to the students through VLE (or intranet) •  Get staff to post all assignments, handouts, briefs on the intranet or VLE and provide e-mail and discussion group support
  21. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning PLANNING •  The better planned a course, the easier it is to provide support to learners •  Every course to have a package on the VLE containing: –  Detailed Scheme of Work –  All assignments –  All resources –  Links to relevant resources on the web –  Lesson Plans
  22. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning VLE STRUCTURE •  Any user who logs onto the VLE will only see what they are suppose to see •  No user will be allowed to access or see non-related courses, packages, materials, communication items, etc.. •  Once a user has finished their course they will now no longer be able to access the materials •  A VLE with few courses or materials can be lgrazedz, but with a whole college on there, this can lead to confusion and navigation problems
  23. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning STAFF DEVELOPMENT & TRAINING •  The WCC provides free ILT training for all staff within the consortium •  The training covers all aspects of ILT as well as those connected with use of the shared VLE –  Effective use of PowerPoint and Word –  How to use e-mail –  VLE Awareness Training –  Basic ILT Skills –  Authoring, Content Packaging –  Digital Imaging and Video
  24. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning TIME REQUIRED •  Learn how to use VLE, Usually less than 15 mins •  Provide resources to students; fill in a form, less than 10 mins •  Sharing resources, more challenging, but ILT can make it easier
  25. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning PERFECTION •  Your stuff can never be perfect •  Staff always use other people`s stuff, all the time! •  You can never reach a utopian ILT embedded future but you can certainly get close •  You can never have enough time…
  26. Post-16 e-Learning Practitioners` Conference 29-30 November 2004 Explore the future

of personalised learning TIME •  A man with a watch knows what time it is. A man with two watches is never sure Segal`s Law
