MODEL Christ’s Christ’s MENTORING MENTORING / SHEPHERDING PART 3
1 Peter 5:1 NLT 1 “And now, a word to
you who are elders in the churches. I, too, am an elder and a witness to the sufferings of Christ.”
1 Peter 5:1 NLT 1 “And I, too, will share
in his glory when he is revealed to the whole world. As a fellow elder, I appeal to you:”
1 Peter 5:2 NLT 2 “Care for the flock that
God has entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly—”
1 Peter 5:2 NLT 2 “not for what you will
get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God.”
1 Peter 5:3 NLT 3 “Don’t lord it over the
people assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good example.”
1 Peter 5:4 NLT 4 “And when the Great Shepherd
appears, you will receive a crown of never- ending glory and honor.”
In a sense is a dimension of shepherding. MENTOR,
Shepherds Feed, protect, and care for sheep.
Pulls up alongside human beings and model behavior, values and
faith through the shared life. MENTOR,
We have a mentoring crisis in the Body of Christ
these days.
Usually, mentors are people who are elders, more experienced, stronger
members of the group to whom the younger look for identity.
A young and new Christian usually long to be like
some admired Christian leaders.
When we don’t find positive mentors, by default, negative ones
usually find us.
When we are fortunate enough to be surrounded by healthy,
functional, caring people, we tend to become like them.
“A boy cannot become a man without the help of
another man. Most ideally a father, grandfather, uncle, or someone to whom he apprentices.” (By Robert Bligh)
“LET’S LOOK AT 3-WAYS ON HOW TO BE A POSITIVE,
SPIRITUAL MENTOR”
MENTORS Winsome Winsome
Luke 8:40 NLT 40 “On the other side of the
lake the crowds welcomed Jesus, because they had been waiting for him.”
Luke 8:41 NLT 41 “Then a man named Jairus, a
leader of the local synagogue,”
Luke 8:41 NLT 41 “came and fell at Jesus’ feet,
pleading with him to come home with him.”
Luke 8:42 NLT 42 “His only daughter, who was about
twelve years old, was dying.”
Luke 8:42 NLT 42 “As Jesus went with him, He
was surrounded by the crowds.”

1 Peter 5:4 NLT 4 “And when the Great Shepherd

Realizes that they are caring for God’s flock, not their
own. Strong A mentor
Leads out of eagerness to serve, not out of obligation.
Strong A mentor
Are concerned for what they can give, not for what
they can get. Strong A mentor

they were thrown into prison. The jailer was ordered to make sure they didn’t escape.”
Acts 16:24 NLT 24 “So the jailer put them into
the inner dungeon and clamped their feet in the stocks.”
Acts 16:25 NLT 25 “Around midnight Paul and Silas were
praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening.”
Acts 16:26 NLT 26 “Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake,
and the prison was shaken to its foundations.”
Acts 16:26 NLT 26 “All the doors immediately flew open,
and the chains of every prisoner fell off!”
The faith of these two men transcended their circumstances in
life.
They were sure that no matter what happened God IS
in control and would have the best path for their lives.
Doesn’t move by their circumstances, instead they are always full
of hope. Faithful A mentor

Psalms 146:5 NLT 5 “But joyful are those who have
the God of Israel as their helper, whose hope is in the Lord their God.”
It has been said that you can live…
40 days without food,
4 days without water,
4 minutes without air,
4 seconds without hope.
Knows that God is our only hope, our only sure
hope. Faithful A mentor
CONCLUSION
The best mentors know how to point others to Jesus,
the only flawless Mentor.
Good spiritual mentors know full well that they are only
shepherds, not savior.
They know they are leaders, not lords.
They understand that they may be skilled guides, but they
are not gods.
A good mentor, equals a good shepherd.
