  11. What is Flexibility?
Flexible solutions can change their generation or
consumption in response to a instruction signal from UK
    Power Networks.
The generator/consumer responds within a specified time
limit and sustains the response over a predetermined
    window.
Flexible asset types: Distributed generation e.g. CHP, back-
up generators, battery storage Demand side responders e.g.
    EVs, heat pumps

    View Slide

  12. Why Do We Need Flexibility?
Increasing peak loads with EV and heat pump uptake
Procuring flexibility can be more cost-efficient than investing in infrastructure upgrades.
Increasing levels of inflexible renewable generation (like solar and wind)
Flexible assets needed to manage increasing unpredictability and magnitude of peak loads.
Facilitate the transition to zero carbon at minimum cost
Flexibility can deliver reliability at minimum cost to the consumer
