  4. WATERSIDE CITY LEIPZIG HISTORY Leipzig lies midst a floodplain forest

    which is traversed by water.
People always lived alongside the water. In the beginning bleaching, water mills and fishing were important economic sectors. 1 In the Middle Ages there had already been plans for canals connecting Leipzig to the river Elbe. At the time of industrialization the water scenery changed dramatically.
On the one hand there were pollution, piping and drainage. On the other hand it paved the way for new urban districts to be exploited. Also a dream of reaching the sea via Karl-Heine-Canal and Elster-Saale-Canal was born.
Lindenauer Hafen (Lindenau Harbor) and extensive water installations within the city were installed. FIVE GOOD REASONS Floodplain Forest Floodplain Forest Water Mill Dölitz Floodplain Forest
