1. 15 Best Dog Training Treats for Large Dogs in 2026 Large dental sticks, bully sticks, protein chews, and dental bars are a few popular dog training treats for large dogs. Large Dog breeds require treats that are in proportion to their size. They keep dogs occupied for longer periods and also prevent choking hazards. Would you offer the same-sized treat to a Shih Tzu as you would offer to a Bernese Mountain Dog? That’s exactly how it works. As professional dog trainers, we offer a variety of treats to the dogs that we train or even take on board. Treats offered vary as per the dog's age, size, and purpose. I have compiled the points based on over a decade's worth of dog training experience. It will guide you to offer appropriate treats to your dogs. Communities such as r/Dogtraining and r/bernesemountaindogs also strongly agree with most of this compilation. Firstly, we need to understand the purpose of offering treats to our dogs. Note that offering dogs treats irresponsibly is similar to humans snacking on junk.
2. Training Treats vs Long Lasting Chews Training treats and long-lasting chews fill two separate needs. When I am working on obedience or behavior training, I like to use smaller treats that the dog can quickly gulp down. This way I can reward the behavior and immediately continue on to the next repetition. Even large breeds do not need giant treats in the middle of a training session. Bully sticks, dental sticks, and other larger chews work better for enrichment, crate time, or as an occasional longer-lasting reward. Since they take longer to eat they can disrupt the timing of a training session. Whatever you decide to give your dog, be sure the size, texture and ingredients are suitable for your dog's age, chewing style and dietary needs. Quick Comparison of Dog Training Treats

4. Training will require numerous treats to entice your dog into performing a task. So I choose treats that arrive in large quantities or can be broken into smaller pieces. These are often a combination of high quality, nutrition, taste, and pocket-friendly. Commercial Treats and Dried bits 1. Crunchy Bone-shaped biscuits The standard most commonly available baked treats, possible in a larger size for larger breeds. The size needs to be appropriate for the dog’s mouth so it cannot be swallowed as a whole. 2. Frozen Beef-Liver Is it one of those days when you need to keep your giants motivated for long hours? Perfect treat bought in bulk and appropriate for heavy training days. 3. Food Rolls The treats are sliced into cubes like sausages to suit the dog's size. 4. Dinner Patties A few popular brands offer frozen nuggets which can be used as high-value treats. They are even crumble-friendly. 5. Salmon bites Raw meat bites dogs go crazy over. They are made of a single ingredient- fish. Great for health and nutrition while your dogs relish the taste. 6. Air-dried beef recipes High-protein source of chunks for active days. Balance the pleasure and reward through treats and mental stimulation. You may check dog training in Sacramento if you wish to enroll your dogs for balanced training. 7. Frozen Tundra Raw meat ingredients will keep your dogs chasing you for more. High nutritional bites for large-sized dogs.
5. 8. Salmon or whitefish freeze-dried If you are looking for a treat that can instantly get your dog’s attention, this is it. These treats carry a strong scent that quickly pulls dogs away from distractions. Use them for focus and attention training tasks. 9. Soft bite-sized treats These are low-calorie treats that can be used in plenty for obedience training and similar tasks. Human Foods and budget-friendly alternatives 10.Turkey or Beef Hot Dogs While you prepare hot dogs for yourself, you can slice them into coin-shaped treats for your pets. This is a low-cost, nutrition-rich alternative to frozen dog treats. 11.Chicken hearts or gizzards Inexpensive treat options to buy from grocery stores near you. Boil the meat to cook well. Cut it into desired shapes and sizes. 12.String Cheese It is an unparalleled treat for dog training. It is a perfect treat for teaching the heel command in dog training. 13.Beef or turkey baby food Treat your pet’s calm behaviour by feeding them this baby food straight from the pouches. It's a tasty, healthy, and cost-efficient alternative. 14.Chicken Rotisserie You can offer the treat in shredded or chopped forms. It is very suitable for training dogs in low-distraction environments. 15.Leftover Beef Tongue or Roast Beef Highly motivating home-based dog treat. I see my dogs going nuts over it. Cut them into micro-dice according to your dog's size.
6. Low Value vs High Value Dog Training Treats Add after treat number 15 and before “Tips on Using Training Treats.” Not every successful behavior requires the highest-value reward. I prefer creating a reward hierarchy based on how difficult the task is and how distracting the training environment is. • Low-value treats can include regular kibble, simple biscuits, or familiar treats. They work well when practicing commands the dog already understands in a quiet environment. • Medium-value treats can be soft meat-based treats, food rolls, or another food your dog particularly enjoys. These can be useful when introducing a new behavior or increasing distractions. • High-value treats may include tiny portions of cooked meat, freeze-dried meat, fish, or another reward that immediately captures your dog's attention. Save these rewards for challenging exercises, recall training, or environments with significant distractions.
7. The important point is to discover what your individual dog considers valuable. Tips on Using Training Treats • Treats are used to connect dogs to the training provided. They must work as a reward or motivation. So the objective is to train the dogs using the treats rather than the treat itself. Just ensure you deliver the treat to your dog within one second of the favourable behaviour. • To deliver the treat within a second, you need to have them accessible. So carry them handy using a pouch or something with easy access. Fumbling around and searching for treats will distract your dog's focus. • You can cut down your dog's meal by a proportion on heavy training days. Training treats make up a significant amount of calorie intake. You will not want your dog to gain weight because of excessive treats. • Categorize and create a hierarchy for the treats. You can give them crunchy dog biscuits to practice obedience or something already learnt. Similarly, use high-value treats such as real or freeze-dried meat to reward difficult behaviours. • The objective of training a dog with a treat should be to enable learning of a behaviour. The dog should learn to respond to you, and not for the treat in your hand. So treats should fade gradually. Start by treating favourable behaviour every time, change it to every other time, and eventually make it random. Details on service dog training by Prestige K9. Frequently Asked Questions What are the best dog training treats for large dogs? The best training treats for large dogs are small, easy to eat, highly motivating, and appropriate for repeated rewards. Freeze-dried meat, soft training treats, cooked chicken, food rolls, and small fish-based treats can be useful options depending on the individual dog. Should large dogs get larger training treats? Not necessarily. Even large dogs usually benefit from small, bite-sized rewards during repetitive training. Small treats are consumed quickly, allowing the dog to return its attention to the trainer without interrupting the session. What are high-value treats for dog training? High-value treats are rewards that a particular dog finds especially desirable. Small pieces of cooked meat, freeze-dried liver, fish, or another favorite food may work well for difficult commands, recall training, and environments with significant distractions. How many training treats can I give my dog per day? The appropriate amount depends on your dog's size, activity level, regular diet, health, and the calorie content of each treat. Keep individual training rewards small and account for them as part of your dog's overall daily food intake. Can I use my dog's regular food as training treats? Yes. Regular kibble can work well as a lower-value reward for familiar commands and training in quiet environments. More desirable treats can then be reserved for new behaviors or situations involving greater distractions.
9. Can I use human food as dog training treats? Some plain human foods can be used in small quantities, but ingredients must be checked carefully. Plain cooked chicken and small amounts of certain other dog-safe foods may work as rewards. Avoid unsafe ingredients such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and xylitol. Are hot dogs good for dog training? Small pieces of hot dog can be highly motivating for some dogs, but they are better used occasionally rather than as an everyday reward. Processed meats can contain significant sodium and other ingredients, so check the label and keep portions very small.
