体験型イベントに学ぶ:学びと コミュニティ形成の設計 Hands-on Events: Designing for Learning and Community Building

This is a presentation slide for the ESEAP Conference 2026.

Abstract

  1. Shinji Enoki ( 榎 真治 ) Wikimedians of Japan User

Group • Since 2013, organizing and supporting Wikipedia Town / OpenDatathon events with Kyoto OpenData Community and Shokoku-roman • Active in LibreOffice and other open source communities
  2. What is the goal of your event? • Increase contributors?

    • Community building? • Improve participant's literacy? • Or other?
  3. Types of events • Wikipedia editing only (Wikipedia Town /

edit-a-thon) • Photo upload to Wikimedia Commons only (Photo walk) • + OSM mapping = OpenData-thon
  4. Example: Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park (last week) • Former site of

the 1990 International Garden and Greenery Exposition • Wikipedia editing + OSM mapping + photo upload to Commons •
  5. Design depends on your goal • Walking tour: fun, learning

by walking • Collaboration with libraries, museums: resources and learning • Promoting local information • Cross-community
  6. Walking tour • Walking tour: fun is very important! –

Sightseeing along the theme, participants get closer to the topic • OSM group: mapping notes on paper → edit later. Recently, mobile apps allow immediate editing (Every Door) • Wikimedia group: take photos → upload to Wikimedia Commons • Wikimedia group: research what you saw using references → write articles indoors • Trade-off: fun vs. editing time
  7. Collaboration with libraries • Public libraries collect local collections →

often underused • Benefits for libraries: – Local collections get used in Wikipedia Town – Fulfilling their mission to share local knowledge with the public – New connections with the local community • More librarians are now organizing events • Easier for us to get their support
  8. Promoting local information • Desire to promote the local area

    • Civic pride • Gradually building visibility through Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons
  9. Crossover • Cross-community events expand participant's perspectives • OSM mappers

learn about Wikipedia • Wikikedia editors learn about OSM mapping • Librarians discover the open data community • Participants understand each other's projects
  10. Challenges • Editing time is always limited – Ensuring article

quality is not easy. Problems may occur • Continuing contribute after the event is difficult • Improving literacy is valuable, but few become regular contributors
  11. Various approaches in Japan • Some groups aim for Featured

Articles • Some groups target experienced editors - participants come prepared with draft articles • What we have been doing in our local group: – Community building – Open knowledge literacy – Having fun together – Gaining new contributors
  12. Reference: Another approach OSS Gate • For deeper learning: one-day

open source internship event • 1:1 mentor and beginner pairs • Structured roles • Progress recorded and feedback given via GitHub issues • Different goals require different designs
  13. What each group has been doing • Easy to start.

No money or affiliation needed. Just do it if you want to • Each group has been running their own events independently • Wikimedians of Japan User Group supports upon request - sending lecturers and co-organizing • Future challenge: building a sustainable support system within the User Group and reaching more groups
  14. Conclusion / Question? • What is the goal of your

event? • What can you take from our experience? • Let's talk during the break!
