  1. Who am I? • My name is Shannon Classen •

Applied Health Services Researcher with a passion for design thinking, innovation and experimentation. • Canadian Cancer Society, Correctional Services Canada and Veterans Affairs • Connect with me @: – Email: [email protected] – Twitter: @classen_shannon
  2. Empathize • The root of HCD • inspiration, discovery, understand,

hear, analysis... • Goal to gain deep understanding of the needs, motivations and desires of people involved in and affected by an issue • Sample methods: • Ethnography/observation/shadowing • Interviews • Personas • Journey maps
  3. Define • One of the most challenging but powerful components

of HCD • framing, interpretation, reflection, synthesis, insight • Goal is to identify real underlying challenges faced by the people you intend to help in order to design effective solutions • Sample methods: • How might we? (HMW) questions • Five whys • KJ technique
  4. Ideate - Highly energetic and exciting - develop, generate, dream,

explore - Goal is to generate a wide range of potential solutions to address challenges identified through empathy and problem definition - Sample methods: - Brainstorming/brainwriting - Fast idea generator - Mash-ups
  5. Prototyping - The stage of HCD that’s all about thinking

by doing - create, experiment, make, build - Goal is to develop potential solutions by building low-fidelity versions that require minimal time and effort - Sample methods: - Wireframing - Storyboarding - Role playing - Rapid prototyping
  6. Testing • Testing is one of the easiest and most

impactful stages • feedback, evaluate, assess • Goal is to share prototypes you created in order to ensure that you are designing the right thing in the right way to meet your users’ needs • Sample methods: • Guerrilla testing • Remote testing • Moderated/unmoderated testing
  7. Define Hiro is hurt The “boys” play and they play

roughly This behaviour is something they both enjoy What they enjoy is dangerous to Hiro healing How Might I… ...assist Hiro’s recovery and still allow them to enjoy each other’s companionship?
  8. Ideate - Separate the two of them while Hiro recovers

    - Put Tyson in time out if he is too rough - Leave Hiro in his kennel - Constantly supervise play - Read the “Canine Castration” rules with Tyson and discuss the “do’s” and “don’ts” ...
  9. Prototype & Test My prototype started without any red circles...Tyson

drew them during the testing phase… “Lightbulb” moment - Gru (Despicable Me) I had missed a crucial piece of data when empathizing
  10. Ideate - Round 2 - What if I read him

a “kid-friendly” story about the rules - What if I drew a story - What if I drew the rules
  11. Prototype & Test- Round 2 A drawing of the rules

in symbols… Tyson even helped me! ...The IKEA effect...
