  1. Vision & value proposition We want to bridge the gap

between humans and machines, creating virtual minds that interact naturally with people. We combine cognitive models of human behaviour with AI techniques to create artificial dramatic intelligence, an ability that will bring about virtual agents and robots capable of relatable interactions with humans.
  2. The limits of conversational AI The combination of advanced ML

techniques with large language models is ushering a new age for virtual conversational agents. Chatbots can nowadays maintain articulate, on-topic conversations with humans. Even emotional states can be recreated, adding richness to interactions. However, current chatbots are largely transactional, lacking agency and a theory of mind. This limits their applications and prevents them from achieving their full potential.
  3. From AI to human-like virtual minds We believe dramatic intelligence,

the cognitive model that humans use to interact, can unlock the potential of conversational agents, allowing them to: • Show a sense of agency, pursuing and changing goals in the face of support or opposition from others. • Coherently weave rationality with emotion to frame, communicate and further its objectives. • Anticipate potential emotional reactions. • Empathise, responding with appropriate emotional consistency. • Develop distinct personalities based on their interactive footprint.
  4. Why is this useful? Virtual minds with the ability to

interact dramatically will be relatable to humans and, therefore, much more effective at: • Making people comfortable • Influencing and persuading • Teaching and training • Entertaining • Increasing engagement
  5. Where can this be applied? Virtual agents and robots endowed

with dramatic intelligence can be deployed in fields where human-machine interaction requires sophistication: • Role-playing training agents • Educational agents and virtual tutors • Entertainment and companionship agents • NPCs in computer games • Sales and management agents
  6. Potential for market disruption Virtual agents and robots are currently

used in diverse markets to provide specific services like training, education, information and advice, entertainment, companionship, etc. Interactive relatable agents have the potential to disrupt these markets with new, more efficient approaches to traditional services. In particular, they can take on high-level functions requiring the ability to transfer knowledge, entertain, influence or persuade through interaction.
  7. Market size The global intelligent virtual assistant market was nearly

US$ 3.7 bn in 2019 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 34%, reaching US$ 45.1 bn by 2027. The market size for domestic robots for education and entertainment (excluding toy or cleaning robots) and that of public relations robots (excluding telepresence robots) was US$ 337 M in 2017 and was projected to grow to US$ 9 bn in 2025.
  8. Our first product Deep Dramaʼs first product is The Conflict

Zone: a training suite to learn to manage conflict through dramatic interaction with virtual agents, in custom-made gamified scenarios. It creates a non-disruptive, highly customisable, always-on, life-long conflict management training experience, without need for physical human presence. We have developed a dedicated business plan for the The Conflict Zone to complement the Deep Drama business plan.
  9. Different products for different opportunities Many other products are possible,

based on the concept of relatable virtual agents and robots endowed with dramatic intelligence: • A management training suite to learn soft skills. • A virtual health advisor, helping people make good lifestyle choices. • A suite to learn English using role-play games with virtual agents in relevant scenarios. • A module to animate autonomous NPCs in games. • A module to make companionship robots more engaging and human-like. • A training suite for police and military personnel dealing with civilians in stressful situations.
  10. Achieved so far We are developing The Conflict Zone for

commercial use. Funding is required to complete product development and take it to market. The following has been achieved so far: • A demo for this product has already been created. • Several interviews were done with potential customers, with positive feedback on the idea. • A test product has been created for the University of Washingtonʼs Master in Political Science.
  11. Next steps Starting point: funding granted Constant product refinement Ongoing.

Development of next management training module starts at the beginning of the stage. First stage product development Three to six months SImple functionality commercial product launch at the end of the stage Second stage product development Six to nine months. Full functionality commercial product launch at the end of the stage First stage second product development
  12. Marketing and sales The marketing and sales strategy will vary

depending on whether the product is B2B or B2C. The Conflict Zone will be commercialised in a B2B environment, so commercial activity will be arranged accordingly - see business plan for more information. We expect most other potential applications to be in the same B2B environment, with some exceptions. The commercial strategy will be tailored to each product and its target market.
