  1. Imagine driving into Lagos for the first time ever—alone. Your

phones are dead so, no google maps or Lara.ng to give you direction and in the most extreme of possibilities, it’s during a lockdown so, there are no traders, agberos or passers-by to help you find your way. How do you navigate your way to Ligali Ayorinde Street in Victoria Island?
  2. Imagine you walk into the largest supermarket you can imagine

for the first time. You goal is to buy a single item—a bottle of red wine. The supermarket you’re in is fully digitalised, no staff in sight to show you where to find what you’re looking for. How do you navigate your way to the part of the shelves where the wines are located?
  3. The structural design of information systems, interactive services & user

experience to support and enhance usability. IA is essentially a mental way-finding system. 1
  4. A well designed IA helps you answer the questions: -

    Where am I? - What’s here? - Where else can I go? 1
  5. IA is the interplay of meaning, arrangements and rules for

interaction. The organization of information should follow a clear purpose and help users navigate complex information to make decisions. 1
  6. It’s a 3-part model that involves: Oncology—Study of meaning; Taxonomy—Arrangement

into clearly articulated parts; and Choreography—How the flow through the parts remain clear. 1
  7. Pre-computer times Libraries have always been practicing information science. E.g.

The Library of Congress classification system where publications are arranged in alphabetical order for easy retrieval. 1
  8. 1Advent of computers The rise of computers and the internet

came with unique problems: “Small website with little content started growing; platforms, contexts and channels of experience became dynamic.”
  9. 1The rise of computers and the internet came with unique

problems: - Usability & findability; - Content management; - Frequent redesigns. Websites needed proper planning.
  10. IA Content Users Context User tasks & needs; info-seeking behaviours;

experience. Document/ data types; volume; existing structures Business goals; funding; politics; culture; technology; resources and constraints
  11. Is it findable? Is it clear? Is it usable? Is

it learnable? Is it credible? 1
