  1. 1 Urban Data Challenge -Citizen Engagement by Open Data &

Civic Tech- Toshikazu Seto, Ph.D. Project Lecturer Center for Spatial Information Science, the University of Tokyo
  2. What is the Urban Data Challenge? • The Urban Data

Challenge is a yearly community-building contest that brings together local governments, companies, universities, civic organizations, and more for an event focused on using data to solve regional problems. We consider to ”OpenData & CivicTech” formula • {cities and towns} Information → ∞ (open data x civic tech) Activity • UDC is more than its end-of-year contest and awards event ! • The UDC certifies “local hubs” in prefectures all around Japan that organize exchange workshops (study groups, ideathons, hackathons, and so on) throughout the year, involving all kinds of stakeholders in building and growing sustainable communities. 3
  3. Fighting to keep the UDC running in a sustainable way
