The AI-Native Medical Practice Audit: 14 Things...

The AI-Native Medical Practice Audit: 14 Things to Check Before Patients Ask ChatGPT About You

14 million Americans skipped a doctor visit last month because an AI told them they didn't need to go. Most medical practices have no idea if ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews mention them at all.

This is the audit we use at Medical Marketing Firm with cosmetic and aesthetic practices before we ever quote an engagement. 22 slides covering 14 checks across four categories: AI Search, Technical SEO, Local Visibility, and Conversion.

Who it's for: plastic surgeons, med spas, dermatologists, cosmetic dentists, fertility clinics, OB/GYN practices, and any medical office that depends on new patients finding them online.

Want help running the audit? Visit medicalmarketingfirm.com or email [email protected].

  3. T H E P R O B L E M

Most medical practices are invisible to AI. 89% of practice websites have ZERO structured data for AI crawlers 76% have never checked if ChatGPT or Perplexity mentions them 61% of patients' Google searches now return AI-generated answers Which means practice owners are losing patients to competitors who ARE showing up, and don't know it's happening.
  4. W H O T H I S G U I

D E I S F O R If you own, run, or market any of these practices, this audit is for you. Plastic Surgery Med Spa Dermatology Cosmetic Dentistry Fertility / IVF OB/GYN If you run a general practice, you'll still find 80% of these checks useful.
  5. P A R T O N E The 14 checks

Four categories. Fourteen checks. If you pass all of them, you're ahead of 95% of medical practices in America. 01 AI Search Checks 1-4 02 Technical SEO Checks 5-8 03 Local Visibility Checks 9-11 04 Conversion Checks 12-14
  6. A I S E A R C H 01 C

H E C K Does ChatGPT know your practice exists? T H E C H E C K Open ChatGPT. Ask: 'Best plastic surgeons in [your city]' or 'Top med spas near [your zip code]'. If your practice isn't mentioned by name in the first response, you're invisible on the fastest-growing healthcare search channel. W H Y I T M A T T E R S ChatGPT has 800M+ weekly active users. Healthcare is one of its top use cases. If it doesn't know you exist, you're losing patients who will never know they had the option to choose you.
  7. A I S E A R C H 02 C

H E C K Do you appear in Google AI Overviews? T H E C H E C K Google any high-intent query in your specialty plus your city. Check the AI Overview box at the top. Count how many times your practice is cited as a source. If the answer is zero across five searches, your AEO strategy is missing. W H Y I T M A T T E R S AI Overviews now appear on 61% of healthcare search queries. They're the new position zero, and citations drive real clicks, not just awareness.
  8. A I S E A R C H 03 C

H E C K Is your content machine- readable? T H E C H E C K View the source of your top service pages. Search for 'application/ld+json'. If you don't find Schema.org markup for MedicalBusiness, Physician, and MedicalProcedure, you're making AI crawlers work harder than your competitors'. W H Y I T M A T T E R S Structured data is how AI systems understand what your page is about, who you are, and what procedures you offer. Without it, you're invisible to the machines deciding who gets recommended.
  9. A I S E A R C H 04 C

H E C K Are you cited by authoritative sources? T H E C H E C K Search Perplexity for your specialty plus city. Look at the citation list. If your practice doesn't appear as a source on any third-party sites, only your own, you're missing the co-citation layer AI uses to decide trust. W H Y I T M A T T E R S AI search engines weight third-party validation heavily. Getting cited by real publications, associations, or review aggregators signals trust more than your own marketing ever can.
  10. T E C H N I C A L S

E O 05 C H E C K Does your site load in under 2.5 seconds on mobile? T H E C H E C K Run your homepage and top service page through PageSpeed Insights on mobile. Your Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) should be under 2.5 seconds. If it's over 4 seconds, Google is actively penalizing you in mobile rankings. W H Y I T M A T T E R S Over 65% of patient searches happen on mobile. Google demoted slow mobile sites years ago and hasn't relented. A slow site is a choice to lose patients to faster competitors.
  11. T E C H N I C A L S

E O 06 C H E C K Is your site fully mobile-friendly? T H E C H E C K Open your site on your phone. Try to tap the Book a Consultation button with your thumb in one hand. If you have to zoom, pinch, or fight the layout, so do your patients. Test the booking flow start to finish. W H Y I T M A T T E R S Google's mobile-first index means the mobile version of your site IS your site for ranking purposes. A clunky mobile experience doesn't just lose conversions, it lowers your rankings sitewide.
  12. T E C H N I C A L S

E O 07 C H E C K Do you have a service page for every procedure? T H E C H E C K List every procedure you perform. Now list every procedure-specific page on your site. If the lists don't match, you're giving up rankings for every missing combination of procedure + city. W H Y I T M A T T E R S Dedicated pages rank. Lumped-together pages don't. If your competitor has separate pages for rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, and mommy makeover, and you have one generic 'Procedures' page, they win all three searches.
  13. T E C H N I C A L S

E O 08 C H E C K Are you tracking the right conversions? T H E C H E C K Open Google Analytics 4. Check your conversions. If you're counting form submissions but not phone calls, or tracking clicks but not bookings, you're making marketing decisions on incomplete data. W H Y I T M A T T E R S What gets measured gets optimized. Practices that track every patient pathway (call, form, chat, text, walk-in) optimize their marketing 3x faster than those tracking only one channel.
  14. L O C A L V I S I B

I L I T Y 09 C H E C K Is your Google Business Profile fully optimized? T H E C H E C K Open your GBP. Check: verified status, accurate hours, 20+ photos, procedure-specific services listed, attributes filled, Q&A answered, recent posts within 30 days. Anything missing is a ranking signal your competitors are collecting and you're not. W H Y I T M A T T E R S GBP is the single most important local SEO asset for medical practices. A complete profile can triple your Map Pack visibility. An incomplete profile is a competitor's opportunity.
  15. L O C A L V I S I B

I L I T Y 10 C H E C K Are you ranking in the Google Map Pack? T H E C H E C K Google your specialty plus 'near me' from inside and outside your office. Check the three-pack result. If your practice isn't there, find out which three ARE and study what they're doing differently. W H Y I T M A T T E R S The Map Pack captures about 44% of clicks on local searches. If you're not in it, the organic listing below barely matters. Map Pack position is worth more than position one on page one.
  16. L O C A L V I S I B

I L I T Y 11 C H E C K Is your review velocity steady and recent? T H E C H E C K Check your Google reviews. How many are from the last 30 days? How about the last 90? If your most recent review is over 3 months old, Google is reading your practice as stale, even if you have 500 old reviews. W H Y I T M A T T E R S Review recency is a top-five local ranking factor. Practices with 5-10 new reviews per month consistently outrank practices with hundreds of old reviews. Momentum matters more than total volume.
  17. C O N V E R S I O N

12 C H E C K How fast do you respond to new leads? T H E C H E C K Submit a fake consultation request on your own site. Time how long until a human responds. If it's over 5 minutes during business hours, you're losing 21x the conversions you should be getting. W H Y I T M A T T E R S Harvard Business Review research: leads contacted within 5 minutes convert 21x more than leads contacted after 30 minutes. In cosmetic medicine, speed alone often beats marketing quality.
  18. C O N V E R S I O N

13 C H E C K Is your consultation form frictionless? T H E C H E C K Count the fields on your consultation form. If it's over 5, you're losing 30% of potential patients at the form itself. If it asks about insurance on a cash- pay procedure, you've confused 100% of them. W H Y I T M A T T E R S Form length is inversely correlated with conversion rate. Every additional field past four costs you roughly 4-10% of submissions. The best practice booking forms are 3-4 fields maximum.
  19. C O N V E R S I O N

14 C H E C K Do you know your cost per acquired patient? T H E C H E C K Take your ad spend last month. Divide by the number of new patients who came in specifically from ads (not referrals, not existing patients). If you don't know the answer within 30 seconds, you can't improve it. W H Y I T M A T T E R S Agencies optimize for what their clients measure. If you measure clicks, they'll deliver clicks. If you measure cost per actual patient, they'll deliver patients. The question is whether you're measuring the right thing.
  20. P A R T T W O So you failed

a few checks. Now what? The good news: most practices can close 80% of the gap in 90 days if they work in the right order.
  21. T H E 9 0 - D A Y P

A T H Three phases. Ninety days. In this order. 01 D a y s 1 - 3 0 FOUNDATION Fix technical SEO. Structured data, mobile performance, service pages. Complete GBP. Activate review generation. Without this, nothing else compounds. 02 D a y s 3 1 - 6 0 AUTHORITY Build third-party signals. Publications, directories, citations. Start AEO content. Get cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity. The goal is trust signals, not traffic. 03 D a y s 6 1 - 9 0 ACQUISITION Turn on paid campaigns. Google Ads and Meta Ads on top of the now-optimized foundation. Measure cost per patient. Optimize what you can measure. Skipping a phase is why most medical marketing fails. Order matters.
