Managing Social Media During a Crisis

Managing Social Media During a Crisis

Jim Coll became the Chief Communication Officer at the University of Southern Mississippi in December 2010, when the recovering journalist continued a career in public relations that began six years earlier with the Southern Miss Alumni Association.

As Chief Communication Officer, Jim oversees the University’s advertising, marketing, news and media relations, Web, social media and creative services efforts. In 2012, the Public Relations Association of Mississippi’s Pine Belt Chapter named Jim the Bud Kirkpatrick Public Relations Practitioner of the Year.

Previously, Jim worked for more than five years at the Southern Miss Alumni Association as its Assistant Director of Communications. In that position, Jim was responsible for all aspects of the organization’s communications tools, including SouthernMissAlumni.com, and the quarterly magazine, The Talon, which was awarded the top honor in the category of “Institutional Magazine” by the College Public Relations Association of Mississippi in 2009.

Jim has two degrees from Southern Miss and is a dissertation away from a Ph.D. in mass communication. He once was an avid triathlete who completed 13 marathons and an Ironman Triathlon, but he now spends the majority of his time with his wife, Deedré, chasing daughters Anna Grace, 4, and Macy, 2.
