Lyn Roseman Take your speeches, talks and presentations to a
wider audience and a bigger stage Now You’re Talking
—Lyn Roseman “You’re audience wants to know ‘What’s In It
For Me?’ It’s your job to give them an answer that justifies giving you their time and attention”
Find a Core Message 01
This is your big idea. Your opportunity to bring a
fresh angle to a subject
Deciding on your Core Message
Work backwards Start from the outcome. What should an audience
member leave thinking? Deciding on your Core Message Make it Memorable Short, and often the simplest expression of your idea Write it down It doesn’t exist until it’s written somewhere
What’s in it for the Audience

Persuasive Educational Inspirational Types of Talks
Educational • Teaches some facts about a particular subject •
Shows how to solve a specific problem • Explores an entirely new concept Goal: I want the audience to know something.
Persuasive • Attempts to convince someone to change from a
current behaviour or attitude to a different one Goal: I want the audience to do something differently
Inspirational • Shares a vision of a desirable future •
Stimulates action towards creating that future Goal: I want the audience to feel empowered to do something
It’s a Spectrum
Connect with your Audience 02
Know your Audience What kind of people will be at
the event? How do we Connect ? Find Common Ground What do you and your audience share?
Empathy The ability to understand and share the feelings of
another.
—Lyn Roseman “Speaking becomes an act of generosity”
Own your voice 03
Authenticity Versus Performance
—Judy Garland, actor “Always be a first-rate version of yourself,
instead of a second-rate version of somebody else”
Key Takeaways Know your audience and find common ground Connect
