  1. Purpose   1.  Paul  wanted  the  church  to  know  how

     things  were  going  for  him  and   plans  if  released  (1:1-­‐12-­‐2:24)   2.  There  appears  to  have  been  some  discord  and  division  he  writes  to   encourage  humility  with  a  view  toward  unity  (2:1-­‐18;  4:2-­‐3).     3.  Paul,  the  pastoral  theologian,  writes  to  head  off  the  negaGve  teaching   and  consequences  of  certain  false  teachers  (3:2-­‐3ff.).     4.  Paul  wrote  to  commend  Timothy  to  the  church  as  well  as  to  give  a   report  about  Epaphroditus  (2:19-­‐30).   5.  He  also  wrote  to  thank  the  church  for  their  concern  for  him  and  the   giNs  they  had  given  (4:10-­‐20).

     abound  more  and  more  in   knowledge  and  depth  of  insight   27  Whatever  happens,  conduct  yourselves  in  a  manner  worthy  of  the  gospel   of  Christ….  stand  firm  in  the  one  Spirit,    striving  together  as  one.     2  :1Therefore  if  you  have  any  encouragement  from  being  united  with  Christ,   if  any  comfort  from  his  love,  if  any  common  sharing  in  the  Spirit,  if  any   tenderness  and  compassion,  2  then  make  my  joy  complete  by  being  like-­‐ minded,  having  the  same  love,  being  one  in  spirit  and  of  one  mind.  3  Do   nothing  out  of  selfish  ambiGon  or  vain  conceit.  Rather,  in  humility  value   others  above  yourselves,  4  not  looking  to  your  own  interests  but  each  of  you   to  the  interests  of  the  others.   14  Do  everything  without  grumbling  or  arguing,  15  so  that  you  may  become   blameless  and  pure,  “…
