ChatGPT: Create job-specific resumes and cover letters

ChatGPT: Create job-specific resumes and cover letters

After seeing so many people being laid off, I've created a 'Missing Manual Part 2' with ChatGPT to help job seekers explain their experience and skills more effectively. This is especially important for senior professionals, who may find it difficult to articulate their achievements and value proposition.

I hope that this resource will be useful to some

  1. 1.Remember… ChatGTP “augments” your intelligence… it doesn’t replace it. You

ChatGPT You are fully accountable on how you are using chatGPT’s outputs
  2. 2.”Brain dump” ChatGPT-3 needs data. 'Dump' your life using speech-to-text

if you don't like to write. This will provide the raw content to be used with ChatGPT-3
  3. 3.Data upload •Break down your content into chunks and upload

them to ChatGPT-3 piece by piece, asking it to acknowledge the reception each time. •Tip: Once all chunks are uploaded, ask ChatGPT-3 to con fi rm.
  4. 4. Resume writing (draft) •Ask ChatGPT-3 to restructure your raw

data by keeping the most relevant parts. •Tip 1: The output is likely to exceed ChatGPT-3's limit, so ask to output content chronologically (e.g., from 2000 to 2010, then from 2010 to 2015, etc.). •Tip 2: Iterate through each chunk to ensure that you and ChatGPT-3 accurately capture what is relevant. •Tip 3: At the end, create a new chat and message each chunk, then ask ChatGPT-3 to con fi rm that it has everything.
  5. 5. Resume rewriting •Ask chatGPT to put together all the

chunks by rewriting your resume •Tip 1: ChatGPT-3 is hard-stopped when the output becomes too wordy, so the output must be limited to 2000 tokens to avoid the content being cut o ff . •Tip 2: Make sure the base from which ChatGPT-3 starts is clean (put the ask along with the chunks in one single message).
  6. 6. ATS simulation •Get a job description you are interested

in and ask chatGPT to “simulate” an ATS (automatic talent system) and especially the odds of being noticed with your resume. •Tip : challenge chatGPT! Its opinion is sometimes not accurate and/or it might give a perspective you would have never thought about.
  7. 7. Speci fi c resume •Ask ChatGPT-3 to rewrite your

resume for a speci fi c job description. •Tip : Recreate a 'new' chat with the resume and job description for each new job description. Break down the ask into two messages: • Message 1: Ask whether the job description was well received. • Message 2: Include your resume and ask ChatGPT-3 to rewrite it according to the job description in its memory.”
  8. 8. Cover letter •Ask ChatGPT-3 to write a cover letter

based on both your resume and the job •Tip : Request several variations from ChatGPT-3 and mix them together (see the missing manual part 1)
