  1. Cultivating* a Community-Oriented** Organization CMX Summit West October Fifteenth, Two

Thousand Fifteen Tim Falls — VP, Community at Keen IO Thx David, starting from where he left off, let’s jump into this stuff! 15th (my dad’s b-day!) — you know how sometimes words sound weird, even though they’re not new to you?
  2. “In music, a fifteenth or double octave is the interval

between one musical note and another with one-quarter the wavelength or quadruple the frequency. The fourth harmonic, it is two octaves. It is referred to as a fifteenth because, in the diatonic scale, there are 15 notes between them if one counts both ends (as is customary). Two octaves do not make a sixteenth, but a fifteenth. In other contexts, the term two octaves is likely to be used.” wikipedia.org BTW, did you know? That happened to me with “fifteenth”, so…
  3. BTW, did you know? two octaves do not make a

sixteenth, but a fifteenth That happened to me with “fifteenth”, so…
  4. Cultivating* a Community-Oriented** Organization I titled this talk very deliberately,

and I want to share that thought process with you to help set the stage…

  15. Tim Falls @TimFalls [email protected] I always feel weird about this

part of giving a talk. The slide where you talk about yourself. It has a tendency to feel self promotional. But that’s obviously not the intention of speakers, nor the desire of the audience. Reflecting: what is the intention? what do they want to hear? - establish credibility (beyond the fact that David vouched for me, what have I done to get me here?) - establish a greater level of intimacy w/audience (so that we’re connected in a way, and you know i’m a human like you, and maybe we have something in common (or not), and that’s what characterizes your mental mapping of me. So, to do that: Credibility (C) / Intimacy (I): - Pre-2009: farm boy from Indiana - 2009: moved to CO, started MBA, employee #4 at Techstars - Post 2009: #6 at SendGrid, 4 years, 250 employees, team of 15 - met David/CMX; tried to speak in I-IV, now speaking in V (I), - moved to SF (I), Keen (C), NOW (C) Other random stuff: - i love pitbulls, and i’ve lived with one (or more for the last 14 years) - in 2011 at the age of 29, i’d never left the US, so i changed my title from Marketing Coordinator to Community Guy — today, i’ve been to 30 - 29 of which were in the name of community-building
  16. Now, a quick Q for you, to help me start

increasing my level of intimacy w/ you all: DO YOU LOVE WHAT YOU DO? do you love your job? the community profession? the things that occupy your time? *hands raise*
  17. it was an email, and I opened it in the

morning, and I immediately detected an uneasy feeling in my stomach… …it was from one our platform engineers - the community team (and folks from other teams) were doing community stuff - platform engineer felt weird about it (and here’s why…) - he felt comfortable telling us about his feelings - so he told us! and it sucked to hear :( …to be continued… [The rest of the story: closing SHARP

  19. Assumptions A)a partially-integrated, poorly-oriented community program does not deliver ideal

results; typically performing sub-optimally and ultimately becoming unsustainable (in the absence of progress)
  20. A)a partially-integrated, poorly-oriented community program does not deliver ideal results;

typically performing sub-optimally and ultimately becoming unsustainable (in the absence of progress) 2. well-oriented, fully-integrated community programs = YAY! Assumptions Benefits*: - More effective execution against strategy/tactics. - Greater buy-in to community as a net-positive effort/investment - More well-rounded team members throughout co - Greater customer empathy, because higher touch interactions - Lesser need to track/measure/etc - Happier employee-base - because, let’s face it, what we do is really fun most of the time! - Greater reach/amplification through aggregate organization-wide personal networks (because more people will be better connected) - More efficient feedback loop → 1-2 people on community-team vs → 8-10 people from community+engineering+product+sales+etc - Stronger interpersonal relationships within the organization, *Note: most of these benefits are the same that we all recognize - but some are unique at the scale represented by participation of majority of the company
  21. III There are many steps along the path to “YAY!”

    2. well-oriented, fully-integrated community programs = YAY! Assumptions A)a partially-integrated, poorly-oriented community program does not deliver ideal results; typically performing sub-optimally and ultimately becoming unsustainable (in the absence of progress)

you’ll find interesting, actionable, and (hopefully) helpful - discuss 3 steps down the path - discover 3 powerups to help you along the way

Summit East in BK in May: a theme emerged —> some organizations are “all-in, on-board, get it”; some are NOT; some are somewhere in between. You: reflect, locate yourself (community ) in the world (your company) Determine your position on the spectrum - everyone has their place. Ways to test/determine: - what is community’s representation at the BOD and/or overall company strategy level? - what percentage of company is dedicated to community? - are the founders community-minded? do/have they evangelized? —> what are their tendencies? - do you have a budget? what portion of total X budget does that represent? - what percentage of your coworkers understand what you do? - do you question your future existence as a community team/member? - what is the BOD’s level of commitment/buy-in to community? —> verbal signals, action-backed @ Keen IO: community is 1 of 4 disciplines represented at the strategy team level: Revenue, Engineering, People, Community — and at BOD meetings

  42. #3 >> Move Forward : unsplash.com/831gaberodriguez Now you’re ready to

move down the path of plan and execute… As a speaker on a stage, I can’t make your plan for you. But I can give you some special powerups to use along the way. Think: What can you do to move your organization in a positive direction along the spectrum?
  43. Inclusion : unsplash.com/wrwhite3 Certain things need to be experienced, to

be fully understood/appreciated. Even those willing/capable of understanding/appreciating before experiencing will do so even more when the first-hand experience actually happens. A shared experience - especially one of great significance, like attending your first X or going to Y city/country for the first time - is of the most powerful connectors betw people, ideals, concepts, experiences
  44. “You’re already included.” -Dustin : unsplash.com/dougwalters Guess what: they are

already included - you just need to help them realize it. It’s not about pulling people into a thing. It’s about empowering people to be more involved in that toward which they naturally gravitate. Give permission to do what they’d do if they knew they had permission. Include others in what you are doing in community-land. Get involved in what they are doing in [insert dept here]-land. You support others —> they see/feel impact, understand value, recognize ways in which they can get involved and feel inspired to do so. It’s a virtuous cycle! (kinda like the moon’s;) Don’t worry about “stepping on toes” — in fact, step on all the toes! - Gently - Each step = welcome reminder of your existence and ability to contribute to their success; not as a rude interruption that disturbs their progress. Participate. Empathize. Help. Ask Q’s. Request a fresh perspective / provide your own. EXAMPLES: - hackathons, docs-athons, write-athons - meetups, workshops, - attending/speaking at conferences, - meeting customers,

  49. Communication : unsplash.com/ptrikutam Probably not surprising that this is listed

here. We’re not talking about just talking a lot and sending a lot of emails… What if we took communication to another level?
  50. NVC: Marshall Rosenberg Communication Non-violent communication Emotional Intelligence and Self-awareness

Put yourself in the shoes of others; communicate what you would want communicated to you.
  51. Community team as change agent: - educate yourselves - if

these things aren’t supported at the co-wide level, seek out info self-teach - collaboratively lead
