18F is a startup within government that uses modern software development methodologies, user centered design, and of course, open source software, to improve digital service delivery in government. But we don’t just use open source for software — we put everything in the open: policy, practices, failures, successes, design, and research. We’re paving the way for the rest of the federal government, as well as state and local governments, to repurpose all of our work in a way that enables greater transparency and a better user experience, all at a lower cost. This talk will cover some of our biggest lessons learned, and how those can be translated to other parts of the citizen experience.
