An Intro to ArcPad Studio by Chip Stokes

A look into the basics of creating customized forms for ArcPad that can be used for field
collection. We will look at some basic capabilities, such as: text boxes, drop downs, taking
hyperlinked photos, etc. Some USFS forms will also be looked at to see the effectiveness of the
forms. By then end of this presentation the viewer will be able to create and deploy forms to the field
that can easily be brought into ArcGIS on their desktops.

  1.  Mobile field mapping and data collection software that includes

    advanced GIS and GPS capabilities for capturing, editing and displaying geographic information quickly and efficiently.  Basically:  Mobile software  GPS with it  Collect Tabular info  Customize it
  2.  Collects in ArcGIS native format  Easy data collection/

    Bluetooth  Ability to collect tabular information  Ease of adding background data
  3.  Software that allows you to customize many of ArcPad’s

    features. You can build or customize ArcPad to suit your needs.
  4.  Creat custom data entry froms.  Use drop downs,

    check boxes, raido buttons…  Set controls on the fields  Set min/max, require certain fields, set fields to all caps….  Only show certain fields in the form  Field like the objectID field that is generated by ArcMap can be turned off in the form so not to confuse the user.
  5.  Start with a shapefile  Can be a point,

    line or a polygon  Needs to have an attribute fields for the tabular data you want to collect  If you want to take pictures you will need a PHOTO field
  6.  Open ArcPad Studio  It is installed with ArcPad

     In the ArcGIS folder in programs list
  7.  Click on the drop down in the controls box

    and drag and drop it in to the form
  8.  List Values Tab  Add values from .dbf 

    Type in the list  Click ok
  9.  In the same location of the shapefiles there will

    now be a .apl file. This file must stay with the shapefile. This is the file ArcPad will use for the QuickForm.
  10.  Need an inventory of CCC Culverts on the Ozark

    – St. Francis NF  Thousands of culverts inventoried with spatial data, tabular data, and photos in a 6 month period  Over 15 teams of 2 collecting data at the same time  Only issues  Brushy  Snakes
