  1. The Reflexive Mechanism of a Living Lab Platform for Self-Sustaining

Co-Creation Activities Atsunobu Kimura, Japanese Network of Living Lab (JNoLL) Co-Designing Institute for Polyphonic Society Kyosuke Sakakura, Tokyo City University Japanese Network of Living Lab (JNoLL)
  2. Atsunobu Kimura Representative Director, Japanese Network of Living Lab (JNoLL)

Polyphonic Partner,Co-Designing Institute for Polyphonic Society Kyosuke Sakakura Professor, Tokyo City University Partner, Japanese Network of Living Lab (JNoLL)
  3. • Necessity of co-creation Platform • Related research • Examples

of Japanese Platform for long-term impact • Mechanism of the co-creation platform Topics
  4. It is helpful for platform operators to verbalize the value

of their Platform. Verbalizing the value of the platform The results of the project are easy to understand, and the cycle of evaluation and investment continues. Platforms / intermediary support organizations are difficult to see and understand, so there is no awareness of the mechanism, and the cycle of platform evaluation and investment does not work. Living Lab: Three Layer Model Macro (organization & platform) Meso (living lab projects & methodologies) Micro (living lab activities & research)
  5. Related Platform Research How to yield projects (like leaves and

fruits) Evaluations of LL-PF organizations [6, 7] have focused on the PF function for project promotion. Evaluate the region & city (like forest) Methods for evaluating the long-term impact of co-creation projects on the local community [8,9,10] Little research on Mechanism Although factors have been extracted from analyses of successful cases and quantitative indicators have been created, the mechanisms have yet to be analyzed. [11,12]
  6. Research Questions Q1. What Platform mechanisms continuously generate good-projects? Q2.

(future) What framework supports the operation of long-term impactful platforms?
  7. TsunaPro: Japanese famous co-creation Platform Kamiyama Town, known as the

“Holy land of regional revitalization" https://magazine.zennichi.or.jp/town/17659 Successful Case of Regional Revitalization through ICT https://www.soumu.go.jp/main_content/000643406.pdf Kamiyama Town where "people attract people" https://lab.smout.jp/tokushima/kamiyama- cho/tsunapro.html Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Encouragement Award on High School Revitalization https://www.mext.go.jp/component/a_menu/education/micro_detail/__icsFiles/afi eldfile/2018/06/22/1406222_006.pdf Case Study Satellite offices in renovated old houses
  8. Research and analysis methods based on theory of Developmental Evaluation

  11. If there is NO Platform 1.Vision: Unable to see common

vision 2.Resource: Impossible to find abundant resources 3.Activity: Unable to overcome interruptions Vision Layer Latent resources Apparent resources (Realization) Vision Realized activities Layer Resource Layer Suspension/failure Efforts toward realization Results
  12. Episode 1 of Platform Vision Layer Latent resources Apparent resources

(Realization) Vision Realized activities Layer Resource Layer Efforts toward realization Government worker Local carpenter Design manager from outside Inspection outside the town Study session with related parties Changed the procurement 2 bldg. per period Pass on carpentry jobs to future generations
  13. Episode 2 of Platform Vision Layer Latent resources Apparent resources

(Realization) Vision Realized activities Layer Resource Layer Efforts toward realization Government worker Ceder trees Forestry operators Establishment of a certification guideline and system for locally produced cedar Operation of the system Utilizing local cedar to connect nature to future generations 100% locally sourced materials
  14. Episode 3 of Platform Vision Layer Latent resources Apparent resources

(Realization) Vision Realized activities Layer Resource Layer Efforts toward realization Government worker High school students Landscape designer Cultivation of regional seedlings Planting in apartment complexes Create an attractive learning place and connect schools to future generations.
  15. Carpentry, Nature, and High Schools are connected to future generations

Many young carpenters are now active in other projects Town's cedar is now also being used in private construction. High School avoided the threat of closure
  16. Reflexive Aspects of the Platform Mechanism.2 like Roots Enriching diverse

resources Mechanism.3 like Trunk Acting on vision responsibility Mechanism.1 like Sunlight Continuing dialogues and visionary concordance
  17. Continuing dialogues and vision sharing POINT1. Creating a space for

dialogue Diverse outcomes Continuity of activities Realisation Inform the residents POINT3-1. Building Relationships Inside the Community Vision Layer Realized activities Layer Resource Layer Apparent resources Vision Efforts toward realization POINT3-2. Building Relationships Outside the Community POINT2. Activities embody the vision Latent resources Mechanism 1 ・Sharing examples and Experiences from outside the community ・Connecting with communities outside

resources Mechanism.3 like Trunk Acting on vision responsibility Mechanism.1 like Sunlight Continuing dialogues and visionary concordance
  21. Related to the 4-helix model Discussion 1 ❶Vision Layer ❸Activities

Layer Boundary object “Tsunagu (connect) ” across 4 sectors Regardless of sector, focus on informal networking (knotworking) Members who pursued new emergent systems across sectors were active. Heart of the Mechanism Hints for restoring the lack of citizen autonomy : an issue for Japanese Living Lab Release attachment to roles defined by the existing system -> toward redefining roles for the vision ❷Resource Layer Shift from localized, objective awareness of issues -> toward subjective, long-term awareness of issues Shift from improving the existing system -> toward rebuilding one’s own lifestyle
  22. Insight for 5 Helix model This suggests that the influence

of Japanese animism extends not only to ways of thinking but also to institutional design and operation. Discussion 2 Cedar forest Terraced rice fields Local seedlings Akui River Onoji Project
  23. Proposed hypothesis regarding the complex mechanisms of co-creation Platforms In

future, - Refine our ideas by surveying other Platforms - Propose framework based on these mechanisms to encourage operation and investment We welcome discuss with platform operators facing similar challenges ! Summary and Future works
