Next-generation Belgian polar research station • Located in Antarctica (Utsteinen site) • Developed under the BELARE 2007-2008 programme lead by Alain Hubert • Designed as a high-performance, energy-autonomous building • Zero-emission concept: • Energy autonomy • Efficient use of resources • Water recycling • Built to operate in extreme climatic conditions • Intended for scientific research during southern summer seasons • Recognised as an international reference project, with interest from NASA and ESA for future missions
• Early design involvement • BESIX Engineering Department contributed to the conceptual design phase • Off-site construction coordination (Belgium): • Coordination of the entire construction process including logistics, planning, sequencing. • Preparation, testing, pre-assembly of station components in Brussels (Tour & Taxis). • Managing all interfaces from designers, fabricators to logistics partners. • Lead contractor on-site (Antarctica): • Lead contractor during on-site construction (very short austral summer). • Responsible for the final assembly and construction under extreme climatic conditions. BESIX - Built for challenges
structure • Assembly of the wooden base frame – about 450 components • Installation of façade and roof elements • Construction of the tower structure • Specialised structural tasks • Anchoring the station to the granite bedrock of the Utsteinen Ridge • Assembly of a modular post-and-beam structure with nearly 100 prefabricated modules • Installation of high-performance wall modules with multiple insulating layers • Delivery of an airtight, wind-resistant and energy-efficient envelope Structural & technical construction Extreme climate, logistics & precision 21/04/2026 Insert title of presentation 16
prefabrication and on-site assembly • Robust logistics planning is essential; transport can become the main critical path rather than construction • Adaptability on site is key when working with extreme weather and limited resources • Strong coordination between teams (design, pre-assembly, site) significantly improves execution speed • Technical resilience and on-site problem-solving skills are vital in remote environments • Multidisciplinary and experienced teams perform effectively when roles, objectives and leadership are clear Key lessons learned Early involvement and expertise Insert title of presentation 17
