Landscape core qualities as a tool for development and utilization of waterways in the Netherlands

The Netherlands has a rich history in management of waterways. Waterways and canals form an integral part of the Dutch landscape, yet their potential as a value for the landscape is relatively still unknown. Can formulating ‘’core qualities’’ of waterways help policymakers and asset owners/ managers to create value.

  6. Rijkswaterstaat Guide to spatial qualities of canals RIJKSWATERSTAAT & BUREAU

VERBEEK LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE 7 Core qualities are based on: • Historical research on the original principles of design and integration • Analysis of the present day lay-out of the canal • Relevant spatial developments along the canal Core qualities
  7. Rijkswaterstaat Guide to spatial qualities of canals RIJKSWATERSTAAT & BUREAU

VERBEEK LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE 8 Areas of concern • The level of abstraction and detail is crucial • A canal originally had a consistent set of principles on design and integration • It sometimes is difficult to find out/to ascertain the original principles on design and integration • It must be possible to make the integral decisions (administrative, financial, other aspects (safety, ecology, heritage) or local support) in the project or the maintanance organisation itself

VERBEEK LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE 40 Why using core qualities as a guide in canaldesign? • To create a solid base for maintainance • To be able to promote consistency or diversity in canal design • To be able to get back on track with spatial quality • To be able to discuss on the same level on third party development • As a basis for policy development • As a basis to substantiate the need of financing spatial quality
