  1. Overview I.  A BRIEF HISTORY OF LIBRARIES (AND DATA) II.

WHY NOT ALL DATA ARE IN ‘LIBRARIES’ II. CURRENT TRENDS AND DEVELOPMENTS III. SOME EXAMPLES IV. CONCLUSION [Anlass der Präsentation]

  3. Interim Summary: 2 Notions of the Data Library •  Physical

Data Library: derived from a longstanding history of librarianship –  Strenghts: service reputation, recurrent funds and a profession behind it –  Weakness: little subject-specific expertise •  Virtual Data Library: derived from urgent needs in (research) practice –  Strength: built on outstanding subject-specific expertise –  Weakness: service not always culture of research, no recurrent funding •  However –  The physical data library is about virtual data services –  The virtual data library will need a physical infrastructure •  Ergo –  Both have to be brought together [Anlass der Präsentation]
  4. Historical Challenge for Data Research literature and research data need

to be linked to stay a meaningful record of research ... Libraries and data services need to provide durable business relations or consolidate

  6. Research Data Alliance •  An international forum for all stakeholders

in research data •  Organized in Interest Groups and Working Groups •  Libraries active in many contexts: massive BoF participation •  „Small Data“ as a specific challenge: The „Long Tail“ of Research Data
  7. Coclusion •  Libraries kept a record of knowledge for centuries

    •  Libraries became a data powerhouse in the digital age •  However, the record of literature and research data got separated •  Data Libraries were built in libraries, IT Services and enterprises •  Now, a spirit of collaboration is emerging at campuses •  The record of literature and the record of research data is being recombined •  Let‘s build thh global data library [Anlass der Präsentation]
