MEANING MAKING MEANING > CORE BELIEF > ACTION/REACTION Emotional Response Foundational Event New Core Belief Trigger Event Reinforced Core Belief TIME PASSES This is one event or a series of events that are impactful in that they drive a new core and often subconscious belief. The foundational event triggers a positive or negative emotion that defines the new core belief. The new core belief assigns meaning to the emotional state, and can be triggered by future events that elicit a similar emotional response. At a later time, another separate event may occur that elicits a similar emotional response to the foundational event. This familiar emotional experience triggers the core belief, assigning meaning to the event, and further reinforcing this belief.
8. WHY BOTHER? If we want to impact behavior and experience, designing based on explicit feedback is only the first step. Lasting change comes from targeting the core of experience, the meaning that we assign to the experiences we have. The emotional trigger that drives us to act or not act.
