Lean Coffee A flash talk by @schwuk
will not help you lose weight* *unless you are already
on a diet
will help you have directed and productive meetings
good content means more attendees
more attendees means more content
but…
more content does not always mean good content
who decides if content is good?
the audience
Lean Coffee is about democratising meetings
the audience decides the content
the audience controls the discussion
you will need: Post-itⓇ notes, pens, some sort of timer
…and people
step 1: create a Kanban board
Kanban is a method for managing knowledge work with an
emphasis on just-in-time delivery
看板 (Kàn Bǎn) roughly translates as “signboard”
Kanban puts the “lean” in Lean Coffee
To Do Doing Done
step 2: create topics* *one topic per Post-itⓇ
anyone can suggest a topic
a topic should be relevant to the meeting
a topic could be a presentation, a demo, a pitch,
or an open question
step 3: introduce the topics
step 4: vote!* *two votes each
step 5: prioritise!
fill the to do section, sorted by number of votes
step 6: action!
move the first topic to doing
start a timer for eight minutes
start the topic
when the timer is up, take a Roman vote
mostly thumbs up? put another four minutes on the timer
mostly thumbs sideways? put another two minutes on the timer
mostly thumbs down? move the topic to done, and select
a new topic from to do
step 7: iterate!
(optional) step 8: review
not only have you had a great meeting…
…you’ve learnt/taught Kanban!
lanes, prioritisation, work-in-progress constraints, feedback loops, and collaboration
The principles of Lean Coffee can be used for any
type of meeting
